NZ Avocados

There are over 500 different varieties of avocados in the world. Originating in Mexico, the avocado fruit (that’s right, it’s a fruit not a vegetable) has been grown around the world for centuries.

In New Zealand, avocados are grown in two main areas – the winterless North and sunny Bay of Plenty. The avocado is a sub-tropical fruit so more suited for those warmer climates in Aotearoa.

The main varieties grown in New Zealand are Hass, Reed, Bacon, Zutano and Fuerte – occasionally you might see your local garden centre offering a different variety, but for us Kiwis 95% of the avocado plantings are Hass.
